BEYOND THE VESSEL

“Ceramics has always been a vehicle for conveying shared human stories.” Born from this concept, BEYOND THE VESSEL was curated by Catherine Milner and Karoly Aliotti.

The work puts the visitor face to face with ancient myths from various cultures. wether it is Medusa or the man with 40 legs, it’s all there, echoed down generations and inspired an exciting new wave of contemporary art, and spooking unsuspecting visitors who didn’t know they had childhood issues until that moment!

THE GATHERING OF STORY-TELLERS
AT MESHER ART GALLERY
TAKSIM, ISTANBUL, TURKEY

The work echos surrealist work such as Salvador Dali’s “The Persistence of Memory” or Henry Fuseli’s “The Nightmare”. It gave us a feeling of unrest and heaviness.

In the Gallery’s statement, they said that “While some artists in the exhibition do not fire their clay, others use found shards of ceramic to develop their work. The different techniques implemented within the artworks result in a myriad of genres, ranging from hyperrealism to abstraction.”

While we don’t understand what difference does that make exactly, we can still appreciate the level of artistry and detail shown in the work. and we can still sense that it is an investigation of human affairs, past and present, molded by that primordial human material, clay.

Every artwork was met with a gasp. either because of its brilliance, beauty or gruesomeness. We think that this is exactly this work was intended for, It was curated to take your mind on a rollercoaster of opposites —nightmares and dreams, the monstrous and the beautiful, the past and the present, all captured in the same instance.

In leaving the exhibition, we felt that we had just woken up from a dream — disoriented, with our minds still lingering between the stories we just saw.

We then joined the crowds walking in famous Istiklal Street.
